Confusion of a pathological degree usually refers to loss of orientation (ability to place oneself correctly in the world by time, location, and personal identity), sometimes accompanied by disordered consciousness and often memory (ability to correctly recall previous events or learn new material). Confusion as such is not synonymous with inability to focus attention, although severe inability to focus attention can cause, or greatly contribute to, confusion. Together, confusion and inability to focus attention (both of which affect judgment) are the twin symptoms of a loss or lack of normal brain function (mentation). . The milder degrees of confusion as pathological symptoms are relative to previous function. Thus (for example) a mathematician confused about manipulation of simple fractions may be showing pathology which would not be diagnosable in a person without training in this area. Thus, as with the case of delirium, the minor degrees of pathological confusion cannot be diagnosed without knowledge of a person's "baseline," or normal, level of mental functioning.

Confusion may result from a relatively sudden brain dysfunction. Acute confusion is often called delirium (also called acute confusional state), although delirium also includes a broader array of disorders than confusion, e.g. inability to focus attention and various impairments in awareness and temporal and spatial orientation.

Confusion may also result from chronic organic brain pathologies such as dementia. In either case, confusion is usually associated with some degree of loss of ability to focus attention, but (as noted) the association is not invariable, especially for lesser degrees of impairment.

Many health problems may cause the syndromes of delirium or dementia. These syndromes may also occur together, and both of them usually include the symptom of confusion. Since mental function is extremely sensitive to health, the appearance of either a new confused state, or a new loss of ability to focus attention (delirium), may indicate that a new physical or mental illness has appeared, or that a chronic physical or mental illness has progressed (become more severe).

Mental confusion? a part of the theory of possibilities?
Q. you may have seen my last question, if not, then it said that anything is possible, and i call the theory, "the theory of possibilities". in this question, i have discovered something new that would explain how anything could happen, i saw some answers that said that its impossible to slam a revolving door. suppose your mind was tricking you, making you think you cannot slam a revolving door, and when you try it, your mind forgets it and replaces it with another memory, where you cant slam it, when realy, you can. and the mathmatical thot that nothing is faster that the speed of light, well, just thing about this, what if einsteins mind was fooling him too, and something could possibly be faster then the speed of light. it even threatens… [cont.]

A. If our minds are the only thing holding us back from doing "anything," then I would assume someone by now would have figured out a way to forget this fact and break every law of physics that we know. If you contend that we don't have this ability, then is that not the same as saying that the possibility of doing "anything" does not exist, since we are not capable of acheiving this higher mental state? If something can't be done, then we say it's impossible. Therefore, if we can't overcome this hold our minds have on us, then it is impossible to do.

Do you think being a closeted agnostic/atheist would cause some sort of mental problems?
Q. I'm a newly agnostic ex-Muslim Malaysian. Agnosticism and atheism are two things unheard of in Malaysia. So, to be out is of course not an option. What I'm so worried is the fact that I have to pretend to be all religious, praying, fasting and all may cause some kind of mental confusion and probably mental disorder.

A. Closets are generally not healthy unless they are really necessary. I don't think you have to be "all religious, praying and fasting and all." After all, plenty of people who are nominally religious don't do much with that religion. You go to weddings and funerals, you are respectful, and you stay out of religious discussions. You might get as far as developing a line to use when confronted, like "I'm not sure what I believe anymore." That's not exactly a lie, but puts the question out there. If someone encourages you to talk about it, wants to pressure you in any way, just say "I realize it's something I have to work out on my own." In other words, you can keep it to yourself without actually lying if you are careful.

My father (77) began having mental confusion. A CT brain scan found no stroke, but 'cracked glass'; any help?
Q. He was hospitalized for an acute infection and had respiratory arrest while in the hospital. The CT scan was done to rule out stroke. We'd like to know what the 'cracked glass' effect in the scan results might indicate. Before this he was pretty sharp mentally. Now his mind wanders and he has delusions. Thanks for any help.

A. The cracked glass effect is how the brain, or some part of it, appeared in the CT films. It's not a good sign and I suggest you speak to his physician. It's not for me to interpret this sign and I don't think you should post further questions about it. I urge you to question his doctor and only his doctor for answers.
